EXCESSIVE COMPETITION ON HEADLINE PRICES

چکیده
In a variety of purchasing situations, consumers may focus primarily on headline prices, disregarding the full costs associated with acquiring and maintaining product or service contract. Even when this is case, literature has delineated various circumstances where intense competition can protect through so-called “waterbed effect.” article, we however show that have context-dependent preferences, rather exacerbate their society's harm by distorting choice provision. Then, consumer protection policy must sufficiently constrain hidden fees so competition, along high-quality firms' incentives to educate consumers, restore efficiency.

The impact of competition on prices with numerous firms
We use extreme value theory (EVT) to develop insights about price theory. Our analysis reveals “detail-independent” equilibrium properties that characterize a large family of models. We derive a formula relating equilibrium prices to the level of competition. When the number of firms is large, markups are proportional to 1 ¡ 0 £ −1 (1− 1)¤¢, where is the random utility noise distributi...
متن کاملPharmaceutical M&A Activity: Effects on Prices, Innovation, and Competition
The rise of blockbuster pharmaceutical acquisitions has prompted fears that unprecedented market concentration will weaken competition. Two of the most prominent concerns focus on the upstream and downstream ends of the pharmaceutical industry: (1) the concern that these mergers will concentrate the market for discovery and will therefore lead to fewer discoveries; and (2) the concern that merg...
متن کاملIncreasing Returns, Imperfect Competition and Factor Prices
We show how, in general equilibrium models featuring increasing returns, imperfect competition and endogenous markups, changes in the scale of economic activity affect income distribution across factors. Whenever Þnal goods are gross-substitutes (grosscomplements), a scale expansion raises (lowers) the relative reward of the scarce factor or the factor used intensively in the sector characteriz...
متن کاملInsurer Competition and Negotiated Hospital Prices∗
We measure the impact of increased health insurer competition on negotiated hospital prices using detailed 2004 California claims data. We develop a theoretical bargaining model to motivate our empirical analysis, and use the competitiveness of Kaiser Permanente, a large vertically integrated insurer, in a hospital’s market as a measure of insurer competition. We find that increasing competitio...
متن کاملCompetition and the signaling role of prices
In a market where sellers are heterogeneous with respect of the quality of their good and are more informed than buyers, high quality sellers’ chances to trade might depend on their ability to inform buyers about the quality of the goods they offer. We study how the strength of competition among sellers affects the ability of sellers of high quality goods to achieve communication by means of ap...
